Match the Opener to the Door

A tall RV door, a double-wide or a solid wood door asks more of an opener than a standard steel single. A rail opener that suits a seven-foot door can run out of reach on a twelve-foot one, and a motor sized for light panels may overheat on heavier ones.

We look at height, weight, headroom and how the door is used, then recommend a unit that fits. Wall-mount jackshaft openers are often the answer for high-lift and tall doors, and heavy-duty models cover big spans. Installation includes mounting, wiring, limits, force settings and a full safety check, and the door must be balanced first.

When a New Opener Makes Sense

  • The door reaches past the rail

If a tall door needs a longer rail than the opener can offer, or the track leaves no ceiling space, a wall-mount unit is usually a better fit.

  • Constant repairs

A unit that keeps needing gears, boards or limit resets on a heavy door is usually being asked to do more than it was built for.

  • Parts can no longer be found

Older units can be hard to fix when the board or drive is discontinued, and replacement may serve you better than another repair.

How the Installation Goes

  1. 1

    Balance the door first

Springs and track are checked, since no opener can make up for a door that is out of balance.

  2. 2

    Mount and wire

The opener goes in, sensors are mounted at the right height, and wiring and the wall control are connected cleanly.

  3. 3

    Set limits and test

Travel, force and reversing response are adjusted and tested, and we show you how the controls and the release work.

Installation Questions

Can any opener lift a heavy door?

No. Each unit has a rated lifting capacity and a rail length. We choose by door weight and height, and we balance the door with springs first, since the opener is meant to guide it.

Why choose a wall-mount over a ceiling unit?

A wall-mount opener leaves the ceiling clear for high-lift track, storage or a tall vehicle, and it turns the shaft directly instead of pulling the door along a rail. It suits many tall or heavy doors.

Will my old remotes still work?

That depends on the new opener's system. Some work with older remotes and keypads, and others need new ones. We tell you what to expect before the installation begins, so there are no surprises on the day.
