Heavy Doors Reward a Regular Look

A big door does a lot of work every time it moves. Each cycle puts load on the springs, cables, drums and hinges, and a wood door can shift its weight with the weather. Small changes build up quietly until something lets go.

A tune-up is a systematic check. We examine the springs and cables, tighten the hardware that loosens with vibration, lubricate the moving parts and test balance and the reversing response. Any wear gets reported plainly, with a note of what can wait and what should not. For doors that are used constantly, the visit helps predict spring life.

Reasons to Book a Check

  • It has been a long time

If nobody has looked at the hardware in several seasons, loose bolts, dry parts and worn rollers are likely already there.

  • The door feels different

A door that is slower, noisier or heavier by hand is giving you early notice that something has started to change.

  • A heavy or oversized door in daily use

The bigger the door, the faster hardware wears, and spring cycles add up quickly on a door that opens many times a day.

What the Visit Covers

  1. 1

    Inspect and tighten

Springs, cables, drums, hinges, rollers and brackets are examined, and loose fasteners along the track and across the panels are tightened.

  2. 2

    Lubricate and adjust

Rollers, hinges, bearings and springs get the right lubricant, and the track and any strut or support is checked for alignment.

  3. 3

    Balance and safety test

We lift the door by hand to confirm balance, then check the opener's force, travel and reversing, and the beam sensors.

Tune-Up Questions

How often should a heavy door be checked?

Once a year is a good habit for most doors. A very large or very busy door, or one made of wood, benefits from a check more often, since its springs, hinges and rollers see more strain with every cycle.

Will a tune-up fix a noisy door?

It often helps a good deal, since dry hinges and loose hardware cause much of the racket. If worn rollers or a tired spring are behind the noise, we tell you so and explain what would actually cure it.

What can I do between visits?

Listen for new sounds, watch for a door that moves unevenly and wipe dirt out of the track. Please do not adjust springs or cables yourself. If something changes, phone and describe it so we can judge whether it needs a visit.
